We are a family owned bakery that strives to make sure your cake is all you expect it to be and more!
Kalico Kitchen got its start in 1981 as a cake and candy supply store in the Tuckernuck Square Shopping Center on West Broad. Carolyn Mattox (Jeni & Liz’s mother) and her staff made and sold candy, taught candy making and cake decorating classes, and offered children’s birthday parties. After a few years of teaching cake decorating classes, we decided to offer custom cakes. We soon realized how much demand there was for custom cake decorating as opposed to the traditional grocery store sheet cakes.
To allow more time with her family, in the late 90’s Carolyn renovated a portion of her house into a commercial kitchen and moved operations into her home. It was at this point we decided to focus solely on custom wedding and other specialty cakes. In 2003, Jeni Mauney (Carolyn’s daughter) started managing the business, and in 2013 she became owner and moved the cake shop to her home in Glen Allen. We are licensed, insured, and inspected by the Virginia Department of Agriculture regularly.
Jeni Mauney, being raised in the business, has enjoyed cake decorating from childhood. Spending the early part of her career in nursing, it wasn’t until about 10 years ago that she became serious about decorating and took over the management of the business from her mother, Carolyn Mattox. Jeni loves meeting with clients and seeing each cake through from start to finish. She is a busy wife and mother of two, but enjoys ‘playing in icing’ in between trips to Walt Disney World.
Carolyn Mattox, while semi-retired today, she still enjoys designing cakes, advising Jeni and Liz, and most importantly – spending time with her eight grand kids! She is a member of the International Cake Exploration Societé (ICES) and has studied under artists such as Nicholas Lodge, Roland-Winbeckler, and many others.
